英語では名詞の「必要十分条件」よりも、接続の言い方 p if and only if q（p ⇔ q）で述べる。「A であるための必要十分条件は B である」は A if and only if B。用例コーパスでは if and only if が話し言葉・書き言葉ともよく出てくるのに対し、名詞の necessary and sufficient condition は書き言葉（MIT の講義ノート）にわずかにあるだけ。

定義
p ⇒ q と q ⇒ p がともに真のとき、q を p であるための必要十分条件という。このとき p と q は同値である。
q is a necessary and sufficient condition for p when p implies q and q implies p; in other words, p holds if and only if q holds.
例文
書き言葉・答案 A number is divisible by 3 if and only if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3. 整数が 3 で割り切れるための必要十分条件は、各位の数の和が 3 で割り切れることである。
話し言葉 "If and only if" means you have to prove both directions: this one implies that one, and that one implies this one. 「必要十分」ということは両方向を示さないといけない。こっちからあっち、あっちからこっち。
書き言葉・答案 Prove that n² is odd iff n is odd. n² が奇数であることは、n が奇数であるための必要十分条件であることを証明せよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 必要十分条件を示すには、⇒ と ⇐ の両方向を証明する。英語では「両方向」を both directions と言える。
- iff は書くときの略記。口で読むときは if and only if。
