定義
y が x の二次式で表される関数。学習指導要領解説では、中学校は関数 y = ax²（a ≠ 0）を扱い、高等学校（数学I）の二次関数で y = ax² + bx + c の形に広げる。
A function whose rule is a degree-2 polynomial, such as f(x) = ax² + bx + c with a ≠ 0. Its graph is a parabola.
例文
話し言葉 If the highest power of x is 2, it's a quadratic function, and the graph is going to be a parabola. x の最高次数が 2 なら二次関数で、グラフは放物線になるよ。
書き言葉・答案 For the quadratic function y = ax², y = 12 when x = 2. Find the value of a. 二次関数 y = ax² で、x = 2 のとき y = 12 である。a の値を求めよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 中 3 の「y は x の 2 乗に比例する」関数 y = ax² も、英語では quadratic function に入る（y = ax² + bx + c で b = c = 0 の場合）。
- quadratic は「2 次の」。quad- から「4」を連想しやすいが、4 次は quartic（エントリ quartic-equation）。二次式は quadratic expression、二次方程式は quadratic equation（エントリ quadratic-equation）。
- y = ax² + bx + c の形と y = a(x − p)² + q の形の呼び名は、日本語と英語で対応がずれる（エントリ standard-form、vertex-form）。
