日本では「平行移動」「対称移動」を別々に学び、まとめた名前はあまり使わない。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は、基本の関数（toolkit functions、エントリ parent-function）の transformations としてまとめて扱う。OpenStax Algebra and Trigonometry は Transformation of Functions の節で扱う。

定義
関数 y = f(x) のグラフの平行移動・対称移動・拡大縮小をまとめた言い方。y = f(x − h) + k は右に h、上に k の平行移動。
The ways a graph of y = f(x) can be changed: shifts (translations), reflections, stretches, and compressions. For example, y = f(x − h) + k shifts the graph h units right and k units up.
例文
話し言葉 What transformations of the graph take y = x² to y = (x − 2)² + 3? It shifts right 2 and up 3. y = x² のグラフをどう移動すると y = (x − 2)² + 3 のグラフになるかな。右に 2、上に 3 平行移動だ。
書き言葉・答案 Describe the transformations of the graph of f(x) = |x| that produce the graph of g(x) = −|x + 1|. f(x) = |x| のグラフをどのように移動すると g(x) = −|x + 1| のグラフになるかを説明せよ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- y = f(x − h) は右に h の平行移動。x − h のマイナスにつられて左と読まない。
- 英語の transformations には平行移動（shift、エントリ translation）と対称移動（reflection、エントリ reflect）のほか、拡大縮小（stretch、compression、エントリ stretch-vertically）も入る。
- y = −f(x) は x 軸に関する対称移動。
