定義
大きさと向きをもつ量。有向線分で表し、位置を問わず大きさと向きが同じものは等しいとみなす。
A quantity with both magnitude and direction, represented by a directed segment; two with the same magnitude and direction are equal regardless of position.
例文
話し言葉 A vector has a magnitude and a direction — where you draw it doesn't matter. ベクトルには大きさと向きがある。どこにかくかは関係ない。
書き言葉・答案 For the vectors a = (2, −1) and b = (1, 3), find 2a − b and its magnitude. a = (2, −1), b = (1, 3) のとき、2a − b とその大きさを求めよ。
話し言葉 The vector has magnitude 10 and makes a 30° angle with the horizontal, so its horizontal component is 10 cos 30°. このベクトルは大きさ 10 で水平方向と 30° をなすので、水平成分は 10 cos 30° だ。
言い間違えやすいところ
- 日本の教科書は矢印（→）を文字の上に書くが、米国の教科書は太字（v）か、手書きでは上の矢印 v⃗ を使う。
- 大きさ |a| は magnitude（または length、norm）。
- 空間のベクトル（空間ベクトル）も英語は vector（vectors in space ／ in three dimensions）。
